With Marijuana Now Legal, Public Health Has Key Messages They Want to Get Across

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health have key messages they want to get across to everyone with cannabis now being legal in Canada.

As of midnight last night, cannabis is legal across the country. Public Health want to pass along key messages in their “Cannabis Report.”

Public Health says they thought-up the points with these principles in mind:

  • if you don’t currently use, don’t start
  • delay use as long as possible, or at least until the age of 25
  • if you currently use, do it safely
  • seek help if you or someone you know is having dependence issues with cannabis use

Public Health says that while cannabis can make you feel more relaxed and heighten some of your senses, it can also negatively affect your breathing, make you hungrier and have a negative affect on your memory, among other things.

The report adds that smoking cannabis can affect your mental health as well. If you’ve had personal or family history of mental health problems, you’re at a greater risk of cannabis-related psychosis and mental health problems, the report states.

The report states that it’s best to avoid cannabis use until you’re 25 or older. The Public Health report says that if you are using, you should follow Canada’s lower-risk cannabis use guidelines, which are out-lined in the report.

Public Health adds in the report to never drive while high. They state that like alcohol, impairment can last, unknowingly, for a prolonged period of time. The report adds that while cannabis is legal in Canada, it’s still illegal to drive while high.
