Fire Prevention Week Was a Success, But Now Bancroft Fire Department Looking Forward to Winter

Winter is coming and the Bancroft fire department want to make sure you’re prepared for it.

That the messageĀ Matt Musclow, the Fire Prevention Operations Officer with the Bancroft Fire Department, wants to get across after fire prevention week. Musclow says they spoke with over 700 students at schools across North Hastings, includingĀ York River Public School in Bancroft. “Schools are a great place to start,” he says.

Musclow went on to say that with colder months creeping up on us, it’s important to make sure you’re ready for them. He says to make sure your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have new batteries in them. He suggests having all your heating appliances serviced by a licensed contractor.

When it comes to fire safety in the winter, it’s based on common sense. Musclow says that you need to stay at least three feet away from your fireplace when a fire has been started. He adds that you should make sure no combustibles like paper are in the area of the fire. He continues that it’s important to keep children away form any heat sources as well. Musclow says that if you have a chimney, you need to get cleaned along with other service work. Musclow also says that if you’re using a temporary electric heater, you should only have it running when you’re in the same room it is in.
