OPP Remind You to “Lock it or Lose it” This Holiday Season

The OPP want to make sure you don’t spend this holiday season scrambling to replace stolen presents.

The OPP is running their “Lock it or Lose it” campaign over the holidays. The program is designed to remind residents to keep valuables out-of-sight of would-be thieves. “Anything that is visible people will break a window to be able to steal it,” Bancroft OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says.

The OPP says there are 10 things that people look for when breaking into or stealing a car:

  • Vehicle left running
  • Unlocked doors or trunk
  • Bags of any sort (especially around the holidays)
  • Visible electronics
  • Phone chargers
  • Loose change in view
  • Sunglasses
  • Tools
  • Watches or other jewellery
  • Easy access to the trunk from the front of the vehicle

“Any time you are shopping make sure you leave items in the trunk,” Regamey says. He adds that if you don’t have a trunk, use a blanket or coat to cover up the items.
