Bancroft Area Stewardship Council Hope Your Green Thumb Doesn’t Turn Blue Over Winter

It’s never too early to plan for spring.

At least, that’s what the Bancroft Area Stewardship Council is hoping your mindset is. They are asking any landowners interested in planting trees and shrubs on their property this spring to sign up now. “Every year it gets bigger and bigger,” says Ian Hendry, Chair of the Bancroft Area Stewardship Council about the program that he says has been going on for over 20 years.

Anyone participating in the 2019 Tree & Shrub Program will be given low-cost tree and shrubs “suitable for reforestation of open areas, naturalizing shorelines and/or creating wildlife habitat,” according to a press release. This year though, Hendry says there are new additions to the program.  That new addition is the Algonquin bundle. It includes “a trio of species that are of medicinal, spiritual and/or practical significance to the Algonquin people,” the press release reads. You will also be to choose from white pine, red pine, white birch, white cedar, white spruce and buttonbush as well as shoreline bundles.

“The great thing about planting trees today is you’re not planting it today for tomorrow, you’re planting it for the next generation,” Hendry says.

If you’re interested in joining, all orders have to be placed by going to the BASC online store. You can also call the BASC at 613-332-6246. Orders will be completed and available for pick-up in May. Credit card payments are not required to confirm orders.
