Bancroft writers win big in Remembrance Day contest

Four young writers from Bancroft have earned top spots in the 2014/2015 Remembrance Day Literary contest, put on by the Royal Canadian Legion.  The Canada-wide competition aims to bring awareness to the military’s role in society.  Students from grades four through 12 enter at their local branch.  Winners move on in the zone, district, provincial and dominion levels to compete for cash prizes.  Beth Brownlee of Our Lady Mercy Catholic School won first place for her junior essay at the zone level and Colby Evans earned second place in the intermediate category.  North Hastings High School’s Kaitlyn Maloney took the top spot at the senior level and moved to the district competition where she placed second.  Our Lady Mercy’s Peter McEnery also came in first in the zone poem contest.  He finished in third place at the district level.
