Ice Fishers Should Always Prepare For an Emergency, Says Ontario Conservation Officers Association

Don’t fish on thin ice.

That’s coming from the Ontario Conservation Officers Association who issued a statement Wednesday reminding ice fishers to be careful.

President Sean Cronsberry says that anglers need to verify ice conditions regularly and should be prepared with safety equipment before they venture out.

They recommend:

  • Check ice thickness and conditions regularly.
  • Clear ice should be a minimum of four inches for walking and ice fishing, five inches for snowmobiles or ATV’s, eight to 12 inches for a small car or pickup and 12 to 15 inches for a medium truck.
  • Always fish with a friend.
  • Be prepared for an emergency by wearing ice picks, have a cell phone, whistle and floater/survival suit.
  • Always tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return. You can also let them know which route you plan on taking.
  • Stay off rivers and moving water or spring fed lakes.

Cronsberry repeats that ice fishers should always be prepared and have a plan to deal with emergencies in order to increase their chance of rescue and survival.
