OPP Want to Make Sure You Don’t Fall For Employment Scam

Canadians are being targetted by two new “job scams” and the OPP want to make sure you’re protected.

OPP say the scammers will send you an email offering you employment. You will be asked to use your bank account to receive and pass on payments with a commission fee being offered for every payment you pass on. The OPP say the scammers will usually send you a fraudulent payment along with instructions for you to transfer a portion of it elsewhere. “If you get those unsolicited texts or emails, just never respond to them,” Bancroft OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says.

The “mystery shopper scam” and “car wrapping scam” are the two the OPP are notifying residents about. In the shopper scam, you will get a text message saying that you have been selected to be a mystery shopper. The OPP report Shoppers Drug Mart is one of the multiple companies commonly misrepresented as employers.

The wrapping scam involves getting an unsolicited text message saying that you can earn between $300 to $500 a week by wrapping a person’s vehicle. An email link is given with instructions on what the person is to do with the money they get from the scammers. “Consumers are instructed to deposit and/or withdraw a portion of the funds,” a press release sent out by the OPP reads. “Upon completion, victims are advised to deposit or transfer the funds into a specific bank account to pay a graphics company and/or other fees,” the release continues. After learning that the cheque is fraudulent, the person who got scammed is now on the hook for any funds withdrawn.

“They’re trying to make something sound extremely good, so basically if it sounds too good to be true, it is,” Regamey says.
