#9PMRoutine Reminds Drivers to Lock up Their Vehicles at Night

Lock it up by 9:00 PM.

That’s the message from the OPP as officers work to combat vehicle thefts. OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says some would-be thieves will go door-to-door checking to see if one is unlocked. “It’s easy access for them (if the car is unlocked),” he says. Regamey suggests double-checking that your car is locked before you go to bed.

When it comes to your home, Regamey says – like with your car, never leave valuables in plain sight. “Your home is the same as your vehicle,” he says. “If someone walks up to your door and they can see valuables in the immediate vicinity it’s easy for them to break that door open steal those items and be gone very quickly.” Leaving your outside lights on overnight and having them on a timer when you’re gone for a longer-than-normal period of time is always a good way to keep your property safe.

“It’s important to do these little things,” Regamey says about the KOPCAR method. He says that someone can be in an out of your vehicle or home very quickly with valuables if you don’t have them secured.

The KOPCAR method is:

  • Keys – Make sure doors, windows, cars and outbuildings are locked at night,
  • Outside lights – Make sure outside lights are on, but only illuminate places around the outside of the house that are easily seen,
  • Property – Take personal property such as keys, wallets, cell phones to the bedroom when going to bed,
  • Close curtains – Close blinds and curtains after dusk so potential thieves cannot see into the home,
  • Alarm – If the residence has an alarm, set it, and
  • Rest easy – Relax and sleep easy, knowing that the home is safe and secure.
