Creation of New Health Agency is Good for Ontario, Says South East LHIN CEO

The announcement came Tuesday that a new agency called Ontario Health will be created.

Health Minister Christine Elliot made the announcement that Ontario’s local and provincial health networks will merge as the government looks to overhaul the healthcare system. “The government is recognizing a need to be more aggressive with their agenda on integrated care,” Paul Huras, the CEO of the Southeast Local Health Integration Network, tells My Bancroft Now.

The agencies that would be a part of Ontario Health will be:

  • All (14) LHINs
  • Cancer Care Ontario
  • eHealth Ontario
  • Trillium Gift of Life Network
  • Health Shared Services Ontario
  • HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency

Huras says that patients need a more coordinated system that can better accommodate their various needs. “When you have multiple chronic conditions it’s not just one aspect of the healthcare system, it’s many aspects that are required to help these patients,” he says. “He or she should be able to link easily with all components of the system.”

“My hope is that all the good work that these individual organizations have done will be enhanced by working together with other components of the system,” Hurus says about the new healthcare agency. “I expect this to be well coordinated.”
