North Hastings High School Set to Honour Young Women on International Women’s Day

The theme for 2019’s International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter.

Marsha Depotier, one of the organizers of the event, says they will echo that theme during the school’s event Friday. It will start at 11 AM will in the school’s gym. That will go until 11:50 with one Depotier saying one of the highlights will be the improv team performing a 15-minute show on women in history, going from the 1800s to today.

“We just want to highlight women in our community,” Depotier says about the event. “It’s so important that we give our young women a voice.” She says that they will be the next leaders in our community, so they need to know that they are equal to their male counterparts. “As women, we were meant to be leaders,” Depotier says.

At noon the celebration will move to rooms 102 and 104 for a “community feast.” Depotier says that people will come together then and “talk about women.”

International Women’s Day dates back to the early 1900s but was only adopted by the United Nations in 1975. “It’s a great honour to be able to stand beside our young women and help them to see the greatness that they carry,” Depotier says.
