Capital projects in Highlands East are getting a helping hand from the province.
Last week, the province revealed how much each municipality was getting in Ontario Municipal Partnership Funding.
Highlands East is going to get $1.97 million. Mayor Dave Burton says that number is roughly $60,000 more than last year.
Burton, excited about the uptick in funding, said that the municipality intends to use the funding for capital projects and paying for policing in the area.
According to Burton, the councillors were all concerned about what was going to happen, but they were made aware that the funding could not be there next year. Burton echoed the sentiments of his Algonquin Highlands counterpart Carol Moffatt by saying he didn’t believe the funding was going to be eliminated but restructured.
“I believe, by the promise that was made by the province, it will be around for rural and northern municipalities,” said Burton.
