Over $100,000 in Funding to be Given to North Hastings to Fund Six Projects

$115,859 in federal funding is coming to North Hastings thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors grant.

The announcement was held at the North Hastings Heritage Museum where Hastings-Lennox and Addington M.P. Mike Bossio was joined by the Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez. Bancroft Mayor Paul Jenkins, Faraday Township’s Reeve Dennis Purcell and Limerick Township’s Reeve Carl Stefanski were on-hand as well along with representatives from all the programs and places and programs getting funding.

The six places and programs getting funding are:

• $25,000 to the Shamrock Seniors Club in L’Amable for the purchase of a new furnace and to upgrade the main level flooring
• $25,000 to the Bancroft Curling Club for the purchase of a new condenser to replace the 27-year-old one they currently have
• $20,917 to the Little Mississippi Club in Carlow/Mayo to upgrade their sign to a digital one
• $20,417 to the Bancroft Pentecostal Tabernacle to help with an upgrade of their kitchen and provide a “barrier-free volunteer experience for seniors”
• $13,585 to Hospice North Hastings to help them start a dance program for seniors
• $10,940 to the Museum to help with the second edition of their “Honouring the Woman of North Hastings” cookbook, which will be based on seniors’ childhood stories

“It’s important for me to be here as a minister,” Rodriguez told My Bancroft Now after the announcement. He adds that it’s fundamental that history is preserved through museums. “It’s important to preserve these magnificent places,” he said. “It’s our past, it’s our present, it’s our future and it’s who we are.”

“It’s so vitally important to preserve our heritage, but to also get our seniors engaged in assisting in that,” Bossio said. He added that North Hastings has been given the majority of the New Horizons for Seniors grants since he took office. He said places in the area have done a great job in bringing funding to North Hastings.

An additional $100 million was proposed to be added to the New Horizons for Seniors program in the Liberal’s 2019 budget.
