The Town says the break happened Monday morning but will be repaired by the evening.
Now is the time that watermain breaks are most likely to happen, the Town says. “The thawing action creates a lot of ground movement and therefore causes a shifting of pipes,” they note. The stress the pipes get from moving too much causes them to break. “When a break occurs, residents can experience a temporary reduction in water pressure or complete loss of water,” the Town says. You could see discoloured water as well.
Once the watermain is fixed, it will be up to the person using the water to “flush the affected area to ensure the water supply is free of material and has adequate chlorine residual.” If you notice any discoloured water, the Town says that is normal.
If you do end up with dirty water or low pressure, the Town says you should run a cold water tap for a few minutes to clear any discoloured water from your plumbing.
The public water tap will be shut off until further notice because of the watermain break.
