High Flow Levels Could Last For Week or More, Bancroft’s Fire Chief Says

Bancroft’s Fire Chief Pat Hoover gave council an update on the flow level on the York River and potential flooding in the area.

He says there is minor cresting in the river, but the potential is still there for the flow level to increase. “We’re looking at this being an extended event to see high water flowing through our town and bridges,” Hoover says. He says this could last a week or more with the possibility of rain forecasted by Environment Canada.

Hoover says firefighters and members of the Public Works crew spent the weekend working on preventative measures to ensure the flooding impact is minumal to homes and businesses in the area.

“We want to make sure that people understand that areas are cordoned off for a reason,” he says. The Bancroft OPP said Tuesday morning that residents walking through cordoned off parks could be charged with trespassing. Hoover says it’s a matter of public safety.

Town staff will continue to monitor the flow levels and look to minimize the impact it has on residents, Hoover says.
