New Affordable Housing Unit Being Built in Bancroft

A new seven-unit affordable housing unit will be built in Bancroft thanks to funding from Hastings County.

Owner of Springdale Development Inc. Phil Spry is the one behind the plan. He previously worked on building affordable housing in Belleville. He says work will begin on the Bancroft units next month.”We’re getting ready to put things in place and get construction started,” he says.

The unit will be up on the east side of Chemaushgon road after council approved the plan for it Tuesday. Spry says the seven units will be open to everybody, but a priority will be given to those with special needs and seniors.

“Affordable housing is a priority,” Bancroft’s Mayor Paul Jenkins says. While this plan is moving forward, he says that other plans are in limbo because of the complicated federal plan with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. He adds that developers are looking to build affordable housing in the area, just not under the CMHC program.
