Freezing Rain Warning Delays Opening For Algonquin Park

Significant amounts of freezing rain are in the forecast for Algonquin Park Wednesday.

Environment Canada issued the freezing rain warning Tuesday evening. The organization expects up to five centimetres of snow and ice pellets in the morning which will change to freezing rain in the afternoon.

The flood warning for the park remains in effect even though cold temperatures have slowed the melting of snow and ice covering nearly all the lakes. Environment Canada said visitors should avoid areas with high water levels during the spring because cold water can be deadly.

The Friends of Algonquin Park advised people to stay off the ice because hazards are difficult to detect and can change with the weather.

Due to the weather, the park’s opening has been delayed until May 10th.
