The school board’s “Great Place” award is given to students, employees, parents, guardians and community partners who “contribute to student achievement and well-being, and who are held in high esteem through their demonstration of the growing with character attributes.” The school board’s Communications Officer Kerry Donnell tells My Bancroft Now that it’s the highest recognition someone with the board can get. Custodian at Hermon Public School Shawn Grant and Coe Hill School’s secretary Angela Reid are two of the nine winners. Vice Principal at Hermon Public School Taras Humen is the one behind Grant’s nomination. “He does an incredible amount behind the scenes to make this school the wonderful place it is,” he says. “He really works hard to connect with students in ways that help them to be comfortable in the building, to support them in the building.” Humen says over Grant’s 15 years at the school, these are not things he needs to do, but he does them because that’s the kind of person he is. “It’s a great honour to be recognized by everyone here at the school,” Reid says. She was nominated for the award by teachers Michelle Cooney and Mary Connolly. “I put my heart and soul into what I do every day,” she says. From volunteering with students to going into the classroom to help them, Reid says she loves coming to work and going “above and beyond” her job as secretary. The award ceremony will be held Monday, May 27th at 7 PM and the school board’s Education Centre in Belleville.
