Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Happy With Trailer Rule Change

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is commending the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario for changing rules under the Highway Traffic Act in regards to trailers.

Trailers and pickup trucks are now exempt from annual inspection requirements, so long as they are for personal use. This means they are exempt from both the inspection and displaying the yellow sticker. The rule came into effect on July 1st of this year.

Despite the exemption, a number of rules must still be followed to qualify for the exemption. A pickup truck and trailer must be used exclusively for personal purposes without compensation. No cargo, tools or equipment used for commercial purposes can be in the vehicle or trailer. For pickup trucks, they must have a manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 6500 kilograms or less. They also must have an unmodified box or an unmodified replacement box that is the same as the one installed by the manufacturer.

CEO of the OFSC Ryan Eickmeier says that the Ministry of Transport listened to the concerns of snowmobilers by repealing this law. He said the change means less time navigating the red tape and more time on the trails.
