Wollaston Township’s Plan For New Fire Hall Detailed in Public Meeting

With the existing fire hall in the Township in “pretty rough shape,” Wollaston’s Advisor Barry Wannamaker says it’s important to continue moving forward with the plans.

Greenview Engineering presented their plan for the new hall last week in a public meeting. “Everything was really positive,” Wannamaker says. Attendees gave their feedback directly to Greenview for them to look over as planning continues.

Project Director with Greenview Tyler Peters says the new building will be 6,460 square feet, which will be an upgrade from the 1,200 square foot building currently being used. There will be three apparatus bays and room for equipment storage. A training room will be designed to fit 30 people and the building will have a public washroom and parking lot.

The Wollaston Fire Department has put up a temporary structure to house one of their trucks and taken other measures to make sure the building will be safe in the short-term.

“The next big thing will be funding,” Wannamaker says. He hopes to see provincial funding come in, noting that the fire hall is eligible to get some in the future. “We’re basically trying to put ourselves in a position where we are ready to dig,” he explains, noting that makes it easier for them to get funding from the province.

Coe Hill ATV pitched in $1,300 towards the building fund during the public meeting.

Peters adds that there is still plenty of work that needs to be done on the design along with working on estimations for how much the work will cost. That will take them into the fall when the construction tendering process will begin.

The plan is that the new hall will be built to last 50 to 60 years, so energy-efficiency and durability will be their main focus once construction begins. The expected start date for construction is spring 2020.
