Province to Make Producers Responsible For Plastic Waste

The province is transitioning recycling costs away from municipal taxpayers.

MPP Steve Clark, along with Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Jeff Yurek, made the announcement yesterday. Municipalities are currently responsible for the Blue Box Program. The government plans on making the producers of products and packaging fully responsible.

Clark says the move will put accountability for recycling where it belongs – on the companies who make the products.

Yurek noted transitioning the Blue Box Program to full producer responsibility will promote innovation, increase Ontario’s recycling rates and save taxpayers money. He explained the shift is a big step towards diverting waste, addressing plastic pollution and creating a new recycling economy.

The transition is slated to start January 1, 2023. Producers will be fully responsible for providing Blue Box services province-wide by December 31, 2025.
