OPP’s Message to Drivers as Kids Prepare to Head Back to School: “Be Aware”

“The kids are going anxious and excited and they made remember all the rules of the road so we need drivers to pay extra attention,” OPP Constable Shawn Peever says.

With school back in session next week, he says to be prepared to see lots of kids running around and to be delayed by school buses.  Peever adds that you should also be on the lookout for kids on bicycles. It’s also a good idea to plan ahead and expect to be delayed by school buses in the morning.

“It’s a shared effort,” he says of the duty motorists and parents have to protect kids. Drivers need to always be aware and take it slow when in a school zone or around school buses, and parents need to educate their kids on road safety and how to act safely when on a school bus.

If a driver is caught going around a school bus when the stop arm is out, Peever notes it’s a minimum $400 fine along with six demerit points. “This applies whether you are meeting or following a school bus, and includes multi-lane roads,” he says.

Peever says the best course of action is to take it slow and keep your eyes open. “Anticipate the bus stopping, look for kids ahead waiting at the side of the road, because if they are it’s likely the bus will be stopping,” he says.
