Green Party Nominates Candidate in Hastings-Lennox And Addington

Hastings-Lennox and Addington has a full slate of federal candidates.

The Green Party nominated Sari Watson as their candidate in the upcoming Federal election. She currently sits as a councillor in Stirling-Rawdon. Watson also ran provincially with the Green Party last year, finishing with under five percent of the vote behind Conservative Daryl Kramp.

Watson says the only time she’s moved away from Stirling was to study Environmental Resource Sustainability at the University of Waterloo. “At which point I took a year off to essentially recover because it’s a very difficult topic to study,” she says. Watson explains that climate change wasn’t talked about back then as seriously as it is talked about now. She made the decision to get into massage therapy for a short time while working on environmental issues on the side. That’s when the Green Party reached out to her to join them.

Watson calls party leader Elizabeth May an “amazing example for women in politics” and says she’s a strong leader. “It’s important we have some female voices at the table,” she adds.

Watson points to North Hastings as a place that is being affected by climate change. She points out how there was a major flood in 2015 and another one just last year. “This is a sign of climate change,” she says. “This is a sign that weather patterns are shifting.”

“Economically speaking these are costing lots of their savings because whether or not insurance companies will even cover these costs is up for debate,” Watson says. Climate change is also affecting farmers in rural Ontario, Watson points out. She says growing seasons are changing which means they have to wait to get their crops out for the season.

The federal election is set for October 21st. Watson will be going up against Liberal and incumbent MP Mike Bossio, Conservative Derek Sloan and People’s Party of Canada’s Adam Gray. The NDP’s candidate David Tough will also be featured in the election and My Bancroft Now will be speaking with him Tuesday on the upcoming election.
