SIRCH Community Services holding free winter clothing giveaway

“We want to make sure everyone in the community is warm,” SIRCH Community Service’s Program Coordinator Margaret Shelly says of their “Share the Warmth” winter clothing giveaway.

“When the colder months hit, bills go up and that prevents people from spending on things that are just as important,” she explains.

They will be giving away free winter clothing at the Thrift Warehouse in Bancroft on November 22nd from 10 AM until 4 PM. “Everything has been given to us,” Shelly explains. She adds that they have gotten more donations than ever before this year.

The program is open to everyone from toddlers to seniors.

No registration is required to pick up the winter clothing. “You show up, browse and take what you may need,” Shelly says. She adds that it’s important that they make this a judgement and registration free program. “A lot of us that are in a position to help others were on the other side in the past,” Shelly says. She adds that there’s no limit to how much you can take.

Shelly tells the story of a couple that came in looking for clothing for their family. She explains the husband worked outdoors during the winter so he went through winter clothing very quickly because of the tough work he did every day. “Maybe the income isn’t as great as he’d like to afford durable items,” she says. Shelly says they ended up walking out with clothing for themselves and their kids and were “over the moon grateful” about it being free. “It was really heartfelt knowing that the family would be warm and there wasn’t going to be a worry for them about that,” she says.
