Bancroft Area Stewardship Council’s 2020 tree and shrub program now open

“When you’re planting the trees this year, this is for your kids and grandkids,” Chair of the Bancroft Area Stewardship Council Ian Hendry says of their annual event.

“Every year we sell more and more trees,” he says. Hendry says they’ve ordered over 10,000 trees and shrubs this year. They’re available to purchase on the Stewardship’s online store. Hendry says pick-up will be around the first week of May 2020.

Hendry highlighted the new “Healthy Planet” bundle that’s available for $35. “The Healthy Planet bundle will help address a changing planet, including the need for alternate food sources for local wildlife due to the decline of the native beech tree,” the bundle’s description reads. 10 stems each of Eastern White Cedar, Red Oak, and Choke Cherry are included.

The Stewardship Council will also be giving away 500 trees and shrubs this year to help promote their program.

“There’s a big focus right now on global warming and the best way to offset that is by planting a tree,” Hendry says. He says when if you’re on the fence about taking part in the program, think about the future generation. Hendry says planting trees is something that will help your kids and grandkids and the rest of the next generation.

“It’s always good to do a bit of research,” Hendry suggests before planting. He says to check the soil and figure out what kind of species would be best for that soil type. Hendry adds looking around to see what’s already planted is a good idea as well.

He says there are foresters on the council that can help you out if you have any questions.
