Local using dinner as a way to bring the Town together

“It’s not about the food, it’s about the friends,” guitar teacher at Guitar Nuts in Bancroft Kevin Taylor says of his weekly “Friends for Dinner” get together.

Every Wednesday starting at 5 PM, he, his wife, some of his friends and others that he’s never met before get together under a couple of red tents in Cenotaph Park to eat and get to know each other.

Taylor explains he used to busk downtown and would see people walk by, or listen across the street but never stop by and say hi. He adds that he also works downtown and would often see people he didn’t recognize. When he and his wife started inviting friends over for dinner a few months ago, they thought it would be fun if they started doing it outside in downtown Bancroft. “It’s turned out to be a picnic in the park,” he says. Taylor says a dozen or so people showed up for the first week and it’s snowballed from there.

He says he’s also curious to learn more about people and eating dinner with people is a great way to do that. Taylor says he also loves cooking, so he’s happy to cook a few extra portions for the stragglers that might drop-by during the evening.

Taylor says one of his favourite stories is of a man that dropped by on his birthday. “He was quite taken aback because he didn’t have any to have birthday dinner with,” he explains. One of Taylor’s guitar students brought a pie that night so that was the man’s cake and they sang him happy birthday later in the night as well.

Taylor says there’s a core group of people that stop-by every week, but they also get plenty of new people every Wednesday as well. He says it’s usually 15 to 20 people.

In the summer, he says it was easier since it was so nice out every day. During the winter, Taylor and his crew set-up red tents with propane heating. He says to reach out to him via Facebook if you want to drop-by this week or next or if you want to donate some food.
