North Hastings Children’s Services looking for community help as they continue to go after funding for YOURSPACE Youth Space

While North Hastings Children’s Services’ Youth Advisory Board is the driving force behind YOURSPACE Youth Space, the call is being put out to the adults to lend a hand as well.

A meeting was held on Monday to discuss where planning is and what Children’s Services are looking for from the community. “We’re looking for donations, community members with skills they want to share with the youth, furniture, anything to help enhance the space,” the Director of North Hastings Children’s Services Jessica Anderson says.

18 people showed up to Monday’s meeting, including Mayor of Bancroft Paul Jenkins. Anderson says if any others are interested in helping to reach out to her at Children’s Services for more information.

Recently Children’s Services got $7,500 from United Ways Hastings and Prince Edward. “That will help us start the process to find a space in the Bancroft area,” Anderson explains. She adds that 19 organizations have teamed up with Children’s Services to help go after a larger grant to help with the space.

It’s still undetermined where YOURSPACE will be, but Anderson says they will be looking to the youth for input on that along with the Community Planning Committee. The Youth Advisory Board was at Club 580 Friday to work on designing a logo for the building.

“Youth aren’t just the future, they’re the here and the now,” Youth Advisory Board member Brianne Crawford told My Bancroft Now in October. “We need to focus on their well-being to make sure they have the environment and the town and the public to grow and thrive in.”

The board has also been working on setting their priorities for the space. Anderson says one of the top ones has been mental health. “We need a sustainable youth space that is inclusive for everybody and every youth in the community,” she says.

“They will have a huge part to play in this,” Anderson says of the youth in North Hastings.
