Deputy Mayor Charles Mullet honoured for over two decades in municipal politics

His time in politics has taken him throughout Hastings County, but Bancroft’s Deputy Mayor Charles Mullet has always stayed close to home.

“You’re never off the clock,” Mullet jokes. He says he often has people come up to him in the street to ask him what’s going on with council.

Mullet started off as a councillor in Dungannon, prior to the then-township amalgamating with Bancroft in 1999. Back then, Mullet explains the term for council was two years, as opposed to the four-year terms councils have now. After amalgamation, Mullet was voted as the first Deputy Mayor of Bancroft. Four years later he was voted as Mayor of the municipality, which meant he also sat on Hastings County council. He was chosen to become Hastings County’s Warden in 2005 and served a one-year term.

His year as Warden is when Mullet says his greatest accomplishment happened. He worked with the County’s CAO Jim Pine – who still holds the position – to have County council fund the doctors that come through the Family Physician Recruitment Program. “The program pays out $100,000 over five years to medical students or residents of a Canadian medical school or recent graduates who have not yet begun their practice, in exchange for providing five years of service practicing family medicine in Hastings County when they begin to practice,” the description of the program reads on the County’s website.

“This past year we’ve been successful with working with different organizations to create housing,” Mullet says on his and council’s recent work on bringing housing development to the area. “Those are major steps for our little municipality.”

“There’s always something that perks your interest,” Mullet says on what keeps him going after over two decades in politics. He adds that knowing there’s something he can do as a councillor member to make a positive change in the community is a benefit as well.
