Hastings Highlands Public Library beginning “Food for Fines” program

The Hastings Highlands Public Library will forgive your late fees, provided you bring in a food donation for the Maynooth and Area Foodbank.

Their “Food for Fines” program is underway and, no matter how much in fines you owe, it will all be forgiven if you bring in a non-perishable food donation.

“We believe strongly in the service that the Maynooth Foodbank does for our community,” Library CEO Rodd Moffitt says. He adds that sometimes people are reluctant to bring back books because of the late fees they may face, but Moffitt hopes that this realizes that pressure.

“Our demand for the fall and winter always increases due to seasonal work,” explains Secretary for the Foodbank Mary Cannon. She adds that they see another bump as it gets closer to Christmas time.

Cannon explains they service Bird’s Creek to Haliburton, up to Whitney, down to Combermere and back, so they are always in need of donations to serve the large area. She says they will take anything and everything when it comes to non-perishable food, and adds cash donations are welcomed as well.

Moffitt points out that a Christmas tree is also set-up in the library in hopes that even those who don’t have fines will drop-off donations as well.
