OPP warn of scammers impersonating them

In a twist, OPP say that fraudsters are targetting people with a new scam that involves them impersonating the police.

The police report the new scam actually warns users of a scam. OPP says scammers tell the victim that fraudulent accounts have been opened in their name. The scammers pretend to be police and ask for personal information like Social Insurance Numbers and banking information.

Police remind the public that they would never ask for that kind of information over the phone.

In addition, the scammers use phone spoofing technology, displaying the OPP’s 1-888 number. They say this causes the call sometimes to be read as Ontario Provincial Police, despite it not actually being them. OPP reminds the public to verify the legitimacy of any caller before providing personal info over the phone.

They say if a scam artist contacts you or if you are defrauded, contact police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
