Public Health offering insentive to those trying to quit smoking or vaping

Hastings-Prince Edward Public Health is hoping you want to get a headstart on your New Year’s resolution, and are offering a $250 reward if you do.

They’re offering up three prizes of $250 to those who currently smoke or vape, but are wanting to quit. If you register for the contest with Public Health before January 20th and stay smoke or vape free until February 3rd, then you could win the cash prize.

“Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in Ontario, accounting for approximately 16,000 deaths annually,” Public Health says. They point out that in the region they cover in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, there are more smokers than the provincial average.

According to Public Health’s 2017 Tobacco Use Report, 61-percent of users have thought about quitting within six months of starting, but only 43-percent made a serious effort to follow-through. “Research shows that it can take many attempts to quit smoking for good,” HPEPH says.

You can register online, or by calling Public Health at 613-966-5500, extension 600.
