“What you’ve got is what you’re going to keep,” says Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada

With snow already on the ground, Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada David Phillips says to not expect anymore before or on Christmas.

“What you’ve got is what you’re going to keep,” he says. Phillips says that, as of right now, there’s a 30-percent chance for flurries Christmas day, but adds to not hold your breath.

Over the past couple of days in the area, temperatures have extremely high, hovering around -30 during the day with the windchill. Over the weekend and towards the 25th, Phillips says the temperatures won’t be as high. “It’s like a one or two day wonder,” he says. “It’s sort of like a hit and run for the cold weather.”

He says while there is a small chance of rain falling in the lead-up to Christmas day, don’t worry, because it won’t be enough to melt away the snow that’s already on the ground.

“It’s the best of both worlds,” Phillips says. The kids that get toboggans for Christmas will be happy, while those driving to and from their family or friend’s homes will have nice driving conditions and won’t be trudging through a winter storm. He does add that a winter storm could be on the horizon after Christmas or in the New Year, but it’s too far out to be sure.
