Rockhounds to battle Bancroft OPP in charity exhibition match

The Bancroft Rockhounds are playing well on the ice, sitting 6th in the North Division, and on January 19th they will take on the Bancroft OPP in a charity exhibition match benefitting Kids in Need.

“The players are excited about it,” Coordinator Elizabeth Belemba says. She says she has been working with the players to figure out what they could do to help out in the community. “They were looking for a community team they could play and the OPP stepped up,” Belemba says.

Bancroft OPP Detachment Commander Jeff MacKinnon says they were happy to get involved with this and help Kids in Need because they do great work in the community.

Marketing and Billet Coordinator with the team Deb Scott says they’re happy with how the team is performing on the ice, but want to make sure they are doing well with the community off-the-ice as well. “We want to do as many charity events as possible so we can give back to the community,” she tells My Bancroft Now.

The police’s team has yet to be finalized, but she says it will be made up of people playing in local leagues and a “surprise” goalie. MacKinnon wouldn’t tell My Bancroft Now who the goalie is, not even giving a hint as to who the mystery man is.

Up until this past year, Kids in Need’s sole fundraising effort was the Moose FM Radiothon. On top of the $15,637.80 raised during last year’s radiothon, they also got $8,000 from the Hastings Highlands Hilly Hundred and other donations have come in throughout the year from individuals are businesses. They also got $8,500 from 100+ Women Who Care Bancroft Region after their September meeting.

Belemba says some of the Rockhounds players were playfully trash-talking with the officers that were on-duty during Bancroft’s Santa Claus parade.

If you’ve been to a Rockhounds game this season, then you’re familiar with the Chuck-a-Puck contest and the Northern Rural Net Shootout that happens during the first and second intermissions. Bemba says those will also happen during the exhibition match.

The game is set for Sunday, January 19th at 1:30 PM. Tickets are $10 for individuals or $30 for families of four or more. Belemba says you can give extra if you want to donate more to Kids and Need and if you donate a snowsuit, she says you could get a discount on your ticket, or get in for free.
