“Minimal” damage done in ransomware attack on Bancroft municipal office

Bancroft’s municipal office was hit by a ransomware attack before the holidays, but Clerk Lianne Sauter says “minimal” damage was done.

The virus was discovered on Friday, December 20th, but Sauter says they were able to get remove it by Christmas Eve. Since it was  “No private or confidential information was breached or encrypted,” she adds. Sauter says they were able to quickly contain the virus and stop it from breaching all of their systems.

Sauter says some information was lost, but it was not worth them engaging.

“We’re not sure what they were asking for,” she tells My Bancroft Now. Sauter says they did report what happened to the police and the Town’s privacy commissioner.

“We are reviewing our processes in place and our infrastructure in terms of technology to ensure everything is up-to-date and robust,” Sauter says.
