Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP joins race to become Conservative Party leader

Conservative Derek Sloan was elected as the MP for Hastings-Lennox and Addington in last year’s election and now hopes to become his party’s leader.

After the Liberal Party won a minority government in the election, there were calls for Andrew Scheer to step-down as the Conservative party leader, which he did in December.

Since then, the party has been looking for its next leader and has announced they will elect one of June 27th. Along with Sloan, MP Marilyn Gladu has announced her intention to run, along with Alberta-based businessman Rick Peterson to become the party’s leader.

“We are going to go big, bold and we are not going to be ashamed to be Conservative,” Sloan says in a video on his Twitter account announcing he’s running. He adds in the 15-second video that his “full policies” will be coming soon.

The Conservative Party has set February 27th as the first deadline for candidates hoping to run to lead the party. To be eligible to continue, a candidate must come up with $25,000 and 1,000 signatures from party members.

My Bancroft Now has reached out to Sloan for comment, but have yet to hear back.
