Bancroft council approves purchase of new snow plow

Bancroft council approved the purchase of a $35,616 2012 International plow truck with a Dickey John spreader unit.

They purchased the plow using “cash and associated reduction” from the capital reserve that would have otherwise been generated by Connecting Link savings. Public Work Manager Perry Kelly estimates they saved $55,000 on their 2019 budget, and forecast they will save $65,000 on this year’s budget versus last year’s. He adds that the new truck will generate annual net savings of $8,500.

“The current truck used for connecting link operations is a dial operation set by the operator giving too much variance in the application of salt,” Kelly explains. He says the new truck has better salt-spreading capabilities with a minimal margin of error.

Kelly explains that Public Works staff were concerned about having to use the spare tandem truck if a break-down were to happen to one of the department’s other trucks. “By purchasing this dedicated Connecting Link truck, staff will have the flexibility of the spare truck to aid in operations with a breakdown, therefore completing operations within our Council approved level of service and reducing staff time and hours of operation,” he adds.

Kelly notes winter maintenance has been done in-house since November 2019. From the 1st until the end of December Kelly says “efficiencies” were created thanks to the work done with the department’s current equipment. Kelly says the new truck will continue the positive trend because of its improved salt-spreading ability.
