The Prime Minister has come down hard on racism and intolerance.
The PM’s comments that neither have a place in Canada come after Hastings—Lennox and Addington MP and Conservative leadership candidate Derek Sloan called for the dismissal of Dr. Theresa Tam the country’s Chief Public Health Officer.
In a video posted to social media, Sloan criticized the Liberals response to the COVID-19 pandemic and Dr. Tam’s advice that closely mirrored that of the World Health Organization. He accused the WHO of repeating Chinese misinformation. His comments also come on the heels of more reports of racist attacks on Asian Canadians.
He also questioned in an email to supporters whether she works for China or Canada. Sloan says that Dr. Tam has prioritized the WHO over the health of Canadians. He calls for her to resign or be fired.
“The truth is that the WHO services the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China,” Sloan says in the email. He adds that the World Health Organization has been a “puppet” of the People’s Republic of China for “over a decade.” Sloan also alleges that the WHO has covered up the COVID-19 virus, which he believes has endangered millions of lives around the world. He says they did that “at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party.”
In a statement provided to the MyBancroftNow.com newsroom, Hastings County Warden Rick Phillips and CAO Jim Pine have co-signed a letter they have sent to Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer calling for Sloan to be expelled from the party. They call his comments “cruel, racist and completely unbecoming of a Member of Parliament.”
The MyBancroftNow.com newsroom has reached out to Sloan’s office and is awaiting comment.
