Fish Hatchery reaching out to community to support through amidst COVID-19 pandemic

The North Hastings Community Fish Hatchery would normally be holding a fundraiser around this time of year but due to the COVID-19 they can’t, so they’re reaching out to the community for support.

“COVID-19 has really changed things for everyone,” Director of the Board for the North Hastings Community Fish Hatchery Ian Hendry says. He points out that not-for-profits like the Fish Hatchery aren’t excluded from that. “It’s forcing us to adapt and change how we do things,” he adds.

“The Fish Hatchery is all volunteers,” Hendry explains. “We put in 9,000 volunteer hours every year.” The goal of the not-for-profit is to raise local fish and put them in local lakes. They focus on raising Brook and Lake Trout. `The Fish Hatchery adds a lot to the economic development of the area as well by supporting anglers,” Hendry points out.

Around this time of year, they would be preparing for their dinner auction fundraiser that they’ve done for the past 13 years. While they can’t do that, they still pay to pay for things like their Hydro bill, taxes and food for the fishes. “We’ve set a goal to raise $25,000 in donations this year,” Hendry says.

“The residents and businesses of this community have always supported us,” he says. You can visit the Fish Hatchery’s website to purchase a membership, adopt a Trout or make a cash donation.
