Foodbank looking for volunteers for Community Cupboard Cafe

North Hastings Community Cupboard is in need of more volunteers for the makeshift cafe they’ve been running out of Club 580 since April.

Communications Director Monica Piercey says anyone interested needs to have safe food handling certification. She says that’s so there is always at least one person on-hand that can direct the other volunteers to ensure Public Health guidelines are being followed. She says to reach out to the foodbank by email at [email protected], call them at 343-476-0177 or message them on Facebook for details.

“We’re averaging about 100 people a day,” Piercey says. The Cafe is open from 4 until 7 PM on weekdays and 11 AM until 2 PM on weekends at Club 580.

Piercey says they’re also offering food hampers out of their headquarters on 2 Madawaska Street. “What we’ve been doing there is increasing the size of there food hampers we’re giving out,” she explains. The doors there are open from 11 AM until 2 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and from 4 until 7 PM on Thursdays. “It’s alleviated some pressure on the volunteers,” Piercey adds.

She says they’ve also been well supported by residents and businesses since they opened the Cafe. The foodbank got a donation from Jeff and Julie Jones or Jones Feed Mill last week when they dropped off 900 pounds of ground meat. Piercey says Feed Ontario has also been helping them with consistent supply top-ups.

“Anyone needing assistance of any kind is welcome,” Piercey says of the foodbank’s two food stations.
