Ontario announces millions in support for reopening childcare centres

The province is injecting millions of dollars into childcare.  Premier Doug Ford says the money is coming from a historic deal with the federal government through the Safe Restart Agreement.  That gives $19-billion to the provinces and territories, with $7-billion for Ontario.  Ford says the $234-million for licenced child care centres will allow them to safely reopen by increasing cleaning and infection control, purchasing personal protective equipment, and support increased staffing.

Ford says keeping kids safe is the one thing that keeps him up at night, “As a father, I know there is nothing more important than the safety of our children.”

Ford says the additional funding will enhance what he calls “the strictest public health rules in the entire country.”  He added he is confident these plans will allow schools and childcare to open safely.

When pressed, he did not answer reporter’s questions on whether the province would consider smaller class sizes in public schools, insisting the province will support school boards as they plan for a return to school in September and the province will continue to be flexible, referring to the $30-million in provincial funding provided to boards to enhance staffing.
