Hastings County Historical Society featuring Bancroft in new program

Bancroft will be featured in the Hastings County Historical Society’s “Road Trips in Hastings County.”

The five-minute videos feature the rural area of the County – specifically the places where the historical society has placed 134 plaques. The Bancroft Hotel and Monck Road were honoured with plaques by the society.

A website has been set-up by the historical society to show you where all the plaques in Hastings County are.

The society’s President Richard Hughes says the idea for the program started at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when he and his family decided they would take short road trips around the County as a way to get themselves out of the house. As they explored the region, Hughes says he wondered why others don’t do the same. He says the program is a way for people to do that without leaving home. Hughes hopes it also inspires people to travel through the County – so long as they follow the guidelines set by Public Health – and learn more about where they live.

The program is being done in partnership with COGECO in Belleville, and also being posted to YouTube.

Hughes says they try to create an itinerary for each area they visit. “Each of them has a little area you can take in and drive around,” he explains. “So you have five or six little road trips to get you out of the house.” He adds that each video is around five minutes long.

Chair of the North Hastings Heritage Museum Mary Kavanagh will be featured in the Bancroft episode. “The main focus of the visit to North Hastings will be Bancroft and the colonization roads,” Hughes says.

“We didn’t just appear on Earth,” Hughes says on the importance of our history. “It’s important to preserve this.”

He says that every village and settlement has a story about the early days. “What was life like for the first people that came here,” Hughes asks. He says stories like that are so interesting to tell and must be preserved through initiatives like this.

There is no scheduled time for the Bancroft episode to be released. Hughes says it will be out “as soon as it’s edited.”
