Not All Bear Encounters Require Police Action, says OPP

OPP is asking the public to be aware of when it is a good time to call police on bears.
The force would like to remind residents that when black bears come to a populated area, it doesn’t always mean they’re a threat. They say emergency situations include bears entering a school yard while school is in session, stalking people, lingering on site, and trying to enter a residence. Police say you should call 911 if bears are wandering into a public gathering, or are attacking pets or livestock.
However, if bears are roaming around searching garbage cans, breaking into sheds or hanging out into a tree, Police do not consider that an emergency situation. These situations include bears pulling down bird feeders, knocking over barbecues or moving through a backyard or field and not sticking around.
OPP says that non-emergency encounters should be reported to Bear Wise at 1-866-514-2327. The lines operate 24/7 until November 3rd.
