Community rallies to make 27th Terry Fox Run in Bancroft a success

The COVID-19 pandemic changed how the Terry Fox Run was done this year, but one thing stayed the same – the community supporting it.

The slogan for this year’s run was “one day, your way” and was the 27th time it was held in Bancroft.

“We could not fundraise through special events like the No Frills BBQ,” organizer of the local event Ron Speck says.  “Most donations came online.”

Speck says over $6,000 has been raised with donations still coming in. Tha gets added to the over $310,000 that’s been raised in Bancroft over the years. Around the World, over $800 million has been raised. Speck says that schools in the area will be doing their individual runs in the coming days and weeks. “Generally, the school runs raise as much as the community ones,” he says. The time the schools do their versions of the Terry Fox Run varies between schools.

People were out and about throughout North Hastings on the 20th for the run. “I saw people walking, biking, running, hiking, and even canoeing,” Speck says. He says he saw mostly individuals, but there were plenty of groups as well.

“Who knows what the run will look like next year,” Speck says. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get back to our community gathering event.” He says they do know the run will be held on Sunday, September 19th next year.

You can still contribute by going to the Terry Fox Run Foundation’s website, or – for Friday only – you can go to McDougall Insurance’s office in downtown Bancroft and pick up a 40th anniversary Terry Fox Run t-shirt for $20.

Afternoon Host/News I may be a big city kid, but don't let that fool you! I was born in Toronto, but grew up in Ottawa. I graduated from Algonquin College's Radio Broadcasting program in 2014 and worked a whole bunch of events for the local radio station in Ottawa. After doing that for two and a half year, I got the itch to get behind the mic instead of setting them up, so I came to Bancroft. One day you'll see me on TV calling game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, but until then look for the tall, skinny guy running around the streets of Bancroft with a microphone in his hand!
