Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs: No Ice Is Safe Ice

With warmer weather right around the corner, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is reminding riders that no ice is safe ice.

Landon French, Chief Executive Officer with the Federation, says travelling on the marked trails is your safest bet. In March the sun will be shining and there will be warmer conditions, which will affect the structure of the ice. This year due to the lack of an early, strong freeze, French says the ice didn’t set up as well as it could. Conditions can change throughout the day, and club volunteers will work to mark out hazards. He says it is important to pay attention and ride according to the conditions.

French suggests always checking the OFSC trail guide, which will always the most up-to-date information about the trails, and plan your route ahead of time. All trails that cross bodies of water should be staked, and if the trail guide says it’s a green or yellow trail, it is safe to ride between those markers. Stick to the marked trails, as anything else is a risk you are taking on yourself. French says every rider is responsible for their own safety

French would also like to thanks everyone who has worked with the OFSC this season, from volunteers to riders to the individual clubs. While it has been a challenging year, French thinks the snowmobile community has pulled together and done a great job during the 2020-2021 snowmobile season.
