Mayor Jenkins: Town Needs Funds, Space to Implement Warming Center

Hastings County has received a report about how to run a warming center.

The report breaks down the cost-per-day, policies, procedures, as well as bare minimum requirements to run a facility. The report is based on findings from a pilot project in Belleville that hoped to help the homeless population of the city that did not have access to traditional shelters.

Mayor Paul Jenkins says the report can be applied to Bancroft and can be used to run a warming center here in Town. However, he’s not certain that the Town can support such a center. With a small tax base and a lack of facilities that can be used to run such a unit, there are currently not the resources to run such a project. Jenkins hopes that the upcoming federal budget will put aside money to help run a facility, or that money can be found in the recent provincial budget.
