Off-road, all-terrain and utility-terrain vehicle changes coming to Ontario roads July 1

There are changes coming to Ontario roads when it comes to off-road, all-terrain and utility-terrain vehicles.

As of July 1, more ORVs, ATVs (such as two-up ATVs and side-by-side ATVs) as well as UTVs will be able to go on the shoulder of public roads.  Riders will have to use a seatbelt and foot rest as well as wear a helmet.

The province is promoting the changes in June to educate riders and to give municipalities time to make by-law amendments.  Officers won’t be issuing tickets from July 1 until Sept. 1, so drivers can adjust to the changes.  But during this time, police officers will still be able to lay a charge through a summons.

The province says this is part of the government’s tourism and recreation vision for Ontario.  For more information, click here.
