Bancroft Terry Fox Run holding second virtual event this year

The nation-wide annual run to raise money for cancer research will not be in-person this year.

Ron Speck, Organizer of the Bancroft Terry Fox Run Team, says the Run will take place on September 19th. Participants are welcome to register online at the Terry Fox website, set a distance, and walk, run, bike or paddle this year.

Speck himself was diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago, and saw first hand how important the Run is. Through his treatment, recovery and talking with other patients and survivors, he saw the importance of funding cancer research. When the former organizers of the Run stepped back 10 years ago, Speck filled the role with the help of friends and family to keep the Bancroft Run alive. This Run will be his 8th year as organizer.

Typically the Run raises an average of $11,000. Despite the run being virtual last year, they were able to raise $9,000. Anyone wishing to donate to the team can visit the Terry Fox Run website and search the Bancroft team.

A few local businesses have also pitched in to help the Run this year. Terry Fox t-shirts will be available at MacDougal Insurance by late August. Kawartha Dairy will also be doing fundraising for the week of August 23rd. Speck says over the last three years, the business has donated over $4,000 to the run.
