School Board predicts lower enrollment next school year

Due to COVID-19, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board is predicting fewer kids coming through their doors next school year.

Through their calculations presented at a budget meeting this week, board staff says fewer elementary school students will be attending this year as COVID-19 restrictions are expected to continue into the 2021-2022 school year. While board staff expects the majority of these students to return at some point, when they will do so is unknown. Once these students return, the board expects to see a year-over-year increase in the elementary school population.

The amount of kids in secondary school is not expected to change. Board staff expect that those numbers will decrease for the next several years.
