North Hastings Community Cupboard’s needing volunteers for meal program

The North Hastings Community Cupboard (NHCC) is in need of more people to help get meals out to area residents

Monica Piercy with the NHCC says Cafe 580, which distributes free mealsseven days a week, will need more volunteers now that some of their staff are returning to work. They are looking for people to distribute meals, clean up afterwards and do meal preparation. As the NHCC serves 130-170 meals a day to people across the region, they would like to keep a full staff of people working.

Ideal candidates are those with kitchen experience. Piercy says that safe food handling training is a benefit, but not required. Those who wish to take the training will be given it free of charge courtesy of the NHCC. However, there is also a need for people to take orders through the window. Ideally, they want three people to volunteer for shifts from 2 PM until 7:30 PM. At the moment, they usually have one or two people working those shifts, with some doing extra duty. Those who can volunteer earlier in the day can help the chef prepare meals in the kitchen.

Despite volunteers returning to work, Piercy says they have been fortunate to have them come through and help out. Staff at the NHCC are glad to see them return to work, and they serve an amazing community. They are certain that more volunteers will come in to fill those gaps in the coming months.
