Bancroft Town Council implements change to help deal with traffic congestion

It’s a small change, but the Bancroft Town Council is hoping it will help with traffic flow in town.

At a special council meeting earlier this week, Council passed a resolution to remove three parking spots at the southeastern corner of Bridge Street and Hastings Street. This will allow more cars to line up in the right hand turn lane heading east on Highway 28.

In addition, there will be some changes in the east-bound lane of the road. The Highway 28 left-hand turning lane will no longer allow thorough traffic. Instead, those who want to continue east on the highway will use the right hand turning lane, which will still be used to turn right down Hastings Street South.

A similar change will occur on the eastbound lane of Highway 28 at the new traffic signals at Valleyview Drive. The left hand lane will only be used for left turning vehicles, while the right hand lane will be used for those heading into the Town proper.

The move comes as over 6200 vehicles used the intersection on July 30th during the August long weekend, according to stats from Bancroft’s Public Works Department.

“Our community is increasingly busier and the more diligent we can be, the safer our travelers will be” says Public Works Manager Perry Kelly “This will also have a positive effect on the intersection of Mill Street and Bridge Street as well by keeping the traffic flowing, creating less congestion.”

Kelly hopes that these changes will ease traffic congestion and improve traffic flow in the Town of Bancroft.
