Dr. Piotr Oglaza leaves Hastings Prince Edward Public Health

The doctor who was at the head of Hastings Prince Edward (HPE) Public Health during the pandemic is moving to a new job.

Former Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Piotr Oglaza, will be taking up the same role for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health. Oglaza has been at the head of HPE Public Health for the last five years and oversaw the unit at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He will step down from his role on October 15th.

In reflecting on his career, Oglaza says that aside from the pandemic, the greatest public health challenge he faced was dealing with smoking and its related illnesses across the region. He also sounded the alarm on vaping, which has targeted youth especially. However, with so many health issues affecting the region, he says many issues must be addressed as the Unit moves into recovery from the pandemic.

Replacing Oglaza is Dr. Ethan Toumishey, who will take over as Acting Medical Officer of Health. Previously he was Director of Clinical Programs at the Health Unit. Toumishey says the challenges ahead are very vast, especially with the prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. However, despite having large shoes to fill with Dr. Oglaza’s absence, he is honoured to be in the acting role and follow in the footsteps of his predecessor.
